Over/Under Point Total Hits 88 for One Big 12 Saturday Showdown

Scott Morris | October 29, 2016

This season there have been a number of high scoring games in college football. Betting the over/under on point totals is one option if betting the winner is not to your liking for a particular game.

On Saturday, two Big 12 high-scoring offenses will face off against one another in the Lone Star State when the TCU Horned Frogs host the Texas Tech Red Raiders.

With each of the offenses trying their hardest to set scoreboards afire across the nation, it is no surprise to college football bettors that the total points for this game is one the highest in the history of college football.

One online sportsbook opened the line with a point total of 82.5 and by early Friday, the number had jumped to 86.5. As of Saturday morning, one sportsbook had the total as high as 88. The total at this point is tied for the third highest of all time.

Ten games have closed totals of 82.5 points or higher and four of the 10 were played this season. Of the four, three cashed OVER, with the Texas Tech at Stephen F. Austin game cashing UNDER its 87 total by just one point.

In the 10 games that have closed at 82.5 or higher the OVER is 8-2 with combined scores averaging in the 10 games 99.7 points.

Last week Texas Tech played Oklahoma and had an historic performance on offense. The two offenses combined to score 125 points and accumulate 1,708 yards.

Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes II completed 52 of his 88 passes for 734 yards with 5 touchdowns. He also ran for 85 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

TCU’s offense is no slouch. The Horned Frogs are No. 13 in the nation in passing yardage and No. 31 in points scored per game.

Kenny Hill the TCU quarterback has 20 touchdowns combined through the air and rushing.

However, over its last two games played, the TCU offense is averaging only 17 points per game. Over those same two games, TCU has turned over the ball on 7 occasions.

The highest point total thus far in college football history was on October 16 of this year. Oregon played Cal and the closing total was 89.5 points. The teams combined to score 101 in that game.
